Proverbs 3 reminds me of practicing drills in sports. Drills are an exercise in which an action is repeated many times, correcting technique in spite of fatigue. The goal of these drills is to train your body to react instinctively in real game situations without hesitation, even in complete exhaustion. The action becomes automatic because the reaction is trained into the athlete. Solomon begins this lesson, “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart… they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity“. In real life we revert into old habits when faced with certain situations. All too often, our response is out of bounds in the face of criticism, or adversity. Many times we get worn down and frustration fouls up our footwork. Solomon cautions, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck… write them on… your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name“. First you have to prepare. As always, we go back to the basics. I believe this is Solomon’s locker room speech. If there is one verse of scripture to memorize, this is it: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight“. My friend, this is the game-changer you are looking for.
Solomon next identifies the problem that causes most of the penalty flags in our life. “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.” Each of us have our own weaknesses and temptations. When I start thinking I am past that, or lose the caution I can get into trouble. The apostle Paul never forgot his own past, “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst… I was shown mercy… The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly“. I am nothing but a sinner that has received God’s mercy and grace. We need to remember the source of our strength. When we supplement our diet with regular helpings of God’s Word, “This will bring health to your body“. Have you been eating too much junk food? The chapter continues with an odd paring of ideas. He writes, “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing… do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent His rebuke“. It seems that regular giving to God creates a discipline that leads to more prosperity. Some people get the notion that God is against them when things go badly, but listen to the next verse, “The Lord disciplines those He loves, as a father the son he delights in“. Dads that care will coach their kids, and sometimes that means forcing them to do things that are hard, or uncomfortable. Consistent parenting is hard work, but look at the result, “Blessed is the man who finds wisdom… who gains understanding… nothing you desire can compare“. He notes this is the outcome, “Long life… riches and honor… pleasant ways… peace“. If that does not sound familiar, maybe it is time for further review?
He closes by noting the game plan was carefully thought out. “By wisdom the LORD laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding He set the heavens in place“. With that model he urges, “My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment“. These are the products of solid preparation. Here is yet another benefit, “When you lie down… your sleep will be sweet. Finally he adds some sideline instruction. Do not withhold good from those who deserve it. Do not plot harm against your neighbor. Do not accuse a man for no reason. Do not envy a violent man“. Are you tired of losing? Let’s go back to the basics and follow God’s instruction. It is sure to lead to victory.
